Spanish Rule in the Philippines

From a page of the Philippine Centennial Prestige Booklet

The Centennial of the country's freedom could not have happened had it not been for the fight lodged by valiant forefathers starting in the early 16th century. From the onset of the Spanish rule in the Philippines, the Filipinos from the 3 major islands of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao including the Muslim brothers waged a protracted war against the foreign rulers whose government was called "Frailocracy" or the rule of friars in both church and state affairs. The outstanding efforts taken against colonial repression indicated that people all over the islands were one in pursuing freedom and peace. The sporadic and pocket revolts arose from various reasons; personal grievance, heavy taxation, forced labor, encomienda system, agrarian discontent, religious accounts and opposition to Spanish impositions.
